Update: Some folks on Twitter now saying it’s all nothing. BUT, those reporters appear to be Brazilian. I ain’t taking nothing less than a certified Trump-Style AMERICAN journalists word, dammit! (Plus, come on, it’s fun to get all worked up about nothing.)
Update, again: FINE! He’s probably NOT injured. This is what happens when you’re bored and trust a Brazilian Facebook group. WHO CAN I TRUST IF I CAN’T TRUST THEM?!?!
Rumors are now popping up that Jose Aldo is injured and will be pulled out of his UFC 200 bout against Frankie Edgar. Initial reports seem to originate from a Brazilian outlet, which itself made clear that they were rumors. But what the hell, speculation is fun, right?
This would be the second July show in a row that Aldo has been forced to pull out of due to injury.
Again, this is all 100% speculation at the moment. Normally, losing a fight of this magnitude would be devastating but when you look at the entire UFC 200 card you’d barely notice if it wasn’t there. If the injury isn’t severe, moving the fight to another PPV would be the best thing as it’s unlikely to move numbers for UFC 200 but could help a lesser show greatly. For instance, UFC 201 has Robbie Lawler v Tyron Woodley and Mighty Mouse vs Wilson Reis. Those are competitive matchups, for sure, but they aren’t exactly marquee. However, you add a third title fight in Aldo v Edgar and suddenly that’s a damn big show. Or add it to UFC 202 with Diaz vs McGregor 2. Right now, it’s an (interim) world title fight that is FOURTH from the top. Thing is barely even on the main PPV card of UFC 200.
UFC 200 Card
- Light Heavyweight Daniel Cormier (c) vs. Jon Jones (ic) for the UFC LightHeavyweight Championship
- Heavyweight Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt for the right to be BADDEST DUDE EVER!!!!!
- Women’s Bantamweight Miesha Tate (c) vs. Amanda Nunes for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship
- Featherweight José Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar for the Interim UFC Featherweight Title
- Heavyweight Cain Velasquez vs. Travis Browne
- Women’s Bantamweight Cat Zingano vs. Julianna Peña
- Welterweight Johny Hendricks vs. Kelvin Gastelum
- Bantamweight T.J. Dillashaw vs. Raphael Assunção
- Lightweight Sage Northcutt vs. Enrique Marín
- Middleweight Gegard Mousasi vs. Derek Brunson Lightweight
Look at that thing! Almost any of those fights could headline a UFC show. Oh, sure, it might be a UFC in Sioux Falls, SD but still.
What the UFC does, should Aldo prove to be injured, as far as Frankie Edgar is concerned is a question mark. If Aldo’s injury is really bad, there’s no reason that, say, Max Holloway shouldn’t step in and fight Edgar (either at 200 or another show). But, if it’s minor, as mentioned above, then moving the fight a few weeks might end up making the most sense.
I believe strongly that if Aldo pulls out of this, after turning down a Conor fight when RDA went down, that he should be banished from a title shot for a while. A long while. Pretty tired of this BS with him.
If his body is so broken he gets injured, or he is training way too hard, or he just feels he has to be 100% or he pulls out, all three ways tell me get him off the stage and piss off.
Had enough of him if this is true.
I would’ve liked it to be true, just because it amuses me and that’s all I’m looking for at this point in my life, but it sadly seems like I was conned. Well, not really conned because I went into it suspecting it was fake but oh well.
> Maybe it is fake this time around; but there are still 4 weeks until fight night.. He still has plenty of chance to pull a muscle and back out of the fight.
