I should’ve mentioned this last night during the PBP coverage of BJ Penn dying. I didn’t, as I am a lazy man. Also: no one cares about TUF anymore. What people do care about are title fights and, without saying it explicitly, the UFC has booked Cody Garbrandt’s first title defense: TJ Dillashaw.
The two men have been chosen to coach the next season of The Ultimate Fighter. It’ll have some gimmick where it’s a house filled with former UFC fighters and “one fighter on the current roster.” We saw this once before, at least, during TUF 4. Yes, FOUR. They’d run out of innovative ideas a decade ago, which makes sense because there are only so many ways you can show people living in a house and then beating each other up.
Still, this could be good. These two, Cody in particular, do not like each other. I don’t wanna write “hate” but … Cody hates TJ.
Garbrandt has been at the forefront of criticizing TJ for leaving Team Alpha Male. He was talking shit and wanting to beat up MMA’s Mini Judas well before he became champion. And with Dillashaw as the unequivocal #1 contender, we have a rare situation of genuine, organic bad blood between the two best fighters in a division. I can easily see the show having some entertaining moments.
And then the two men will fight, probably in June or July. Now you know all this, even though the entire world knows because there is no such thing as exclusive “news” anymore, just exclusive analysis. And we’re awesome at that.
