Dear Sports Fan,
Please do not be surprised, outraged, or disappointed when you find out that your favorite professional athlete has failed a performance enhancing drug test. Over the last decade many of the greatest athletes in sports have gotten nailed as cheats. Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Roger Clemens, Alex Rodriguez, Lance Armstrong, Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen, Alistair Overeem, Roy Jones Jr., Shane Mosley, Tyson Gay, and Marion Jones were all elite athletes, at the pinnacles of their respective sports, who all broke the rules and used PEDs. And this is only the tip of the iceberg, thousands of other; less famous, less successful competitors have failed PED tests as well.
Yesterday, an article was published, by Thomas Hauser, titled “Can Boxing Trust USADA?” Hauser made many valid points about the current drug testing system in boxing and I’d strongly recommend combat sports fans give it a read. In sum, Hauser called out USADA and Floyd Mayweather for bending the rules regarding PED use. It appears that Mayweather has been up to no good. According to Hauser, Mayweather has been determining when his own drug testing would begin, has avoided advanced CIR testing, used banned IVs, and has potentially had three drug test failures, that have been covered up.
It now looks like Floyd Mayweather can be added to the enormous list of PED cheats too. The undefeated, 49-0, never been knocked down in a fight, multi division champion has been using performance enhancing drugs.
Duh. This should not shock a single sports fan anywhere, ever.
Mayweather has been unbeatable and untouchable his entire career. Fighting the best boxers in the world, many of whom have failed PED tests themselves. How could he do that for so long clean? It’s virtually impossible. Please open your eyes to what’s been happening in sports.
Bonds, Clemens, ARod, Armstrong, and Silva were all the best in their sports and got popped for cheating as well. This is the norm in big money, competitive sports.
At this stage of the game, we should all assume that the top athletes are using, especially competitors reaching their mid-30’s. If the best professional athletes don’t fail a test, presume it’s because they are smarter and have better, newer, less-detectable drugs than their peers.
These athletes literally have millions of dollars on the line. Their colleagues are bending the rules. To stay competitive and make the big money they have to do whatever it takes as well.
Pro sports are competitive businesses, where the best athletes get paid the most money. To compete at the top level and make the top money, athletes almost have to bend the rules. After the last decade of failing tests, it’s safe to assume that elite athletes are all doing something to get an edge.
Please never assume your favorite athlete is clean and more importantly don’t get upset if and when they get caught. If they never fail a test, don’t applaud them for being clean; congratulate them for being smarter than everyone else.
Thanks,
Matt Grady
