There was once a rumor that Sinbad – the famed comedian who rose to fame in the 1990s and who sucked – appeared in a move entitled Shazam. Legend has it the famed (un)funny man stared as a magic genie who did all the things magic genies do.
But there’s a problem: the movie doesn’t exist.
Social scientists/someone on the internet* call this the Mandela Effect. It’s a form of geek mass delusion, like religion but with less sex for the kids. Everyone remembers something happening but it never did. And these folks aren’t in denial about reality. This isn’t a bunch of Democrats who will tell you Gore won in 2000 or Republicans who *know* Obama was born in Kenya.
People swore that Nelson Mandela had died during prison. They had vivid memories of this occurring and it wasn’t a one-off kook: people all over the place reported the same happening to them.
The Mandela Effect postulates that we live in an alternative dimension; that this reality is essentially The Matrix and we occasionally see leftovers. The children’s book series, The berenstain bears, is another example. Most people think it is Berenstein Bears. Personally, I think it’s Bearenstein Bears, but that’s because I’m smart.
MMA now has its own Mandela Occurrence in that Joe Lauzon will fight Diego Sanchez Clay Guida** in November. It is baffling to me this is the first time they’ve fought. I figured – for sure – they’d gone at it. No, I couldn’t exactly remember it but I’d have put money down that it happened.
OK. Fine. That isn’t quite the same as thinking a giant black man played a genie in a movie but it’s close enough. Fuck your facts. Besides, what is there to write? Two of the sport’s all-time warriors will fight. You know there will be blood and violence and sweat and grit and intensity. And if there isn’t then there is in some other reality. But I’m pretty confident this reality will provide nourishment for those of us starving for man in man action.
* The briefest of searches with google reveals that it was a blogger named Fiona Broome. Sounds like a girl. Shouldn’t be trusted.
** I didn’t fuck that up on purpose; that shows how interchangeable these guys are at this point.
