Learn the backstory of Despicable Me’s adorable little evil sidekicks, the Minions! In their first solo feature, go back to the beginning as the Minions try to find a master to serve.
Minions
Are the Minions adorable? Heck yes. They look like a lovely mix of bananas, which they love, and tic tacs.
Are the Minions competent? No. This is a positive though, since they’re evil henchmen.
Do the Minions speak English? No. But their brand of gibberish is sort of adorable, so we’re cool with it.
What does the studio have to say about the plot of Minions?
Meet Stuart, Kevin and Bob as they embark on a journey for their new master. The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. After accidentally killing off so many of them—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without a master to serve and fall into a deep depression.
But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.
The trio embarks upon an adventure that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.
Who’s directing Minions?
As a massive animated film expected to bring in mega bucks, Minions has more than one director. Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda are sharing the duties on this Despicable Me spinoff. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Coffin actually directed the first two Despicable Me films, and Balda worked on layouts and animation on the first as well as films like Monsters Inc and Toy Story 2. It seems to me Balda is really directing, with Coffin acting as a mentor on the project, but it could be a shared responsibilities type directing job, which is pretty common on animated films.
But the writer matters too! Who Wrote Minions?
Considering the Minions mostly speak gibberish, you’d think there wouldn’t be a writer, but those little banana men need something to do and fun things to see! Enter Brian Lynch, who has a sexy first name and a decent bit of experience. The big project I’d call out is his involvement in Puss in Boots, which was in itself a successful spinoff of Shrek. He also wrote a short film based on the Minions back in 2012, so he knows the characters.

Minions Release Date
Minions releases on July 10, 2015
Best Actor or Actress in Minions
Jon Hamm. Just because he’s Don Draper, and he was awesome on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Worst Actor or Actress in Minions
Sandra Bullock. I know some people like her, and just recently those folks were given the right to get married (good for them), but I can not pretend her involvement is a positive sign.
Is Minions Worth Seeing?
Heck yes. Actually, it probably won’t be as good as the others, but the trailers look funny, and 90 minutes of those adorable little yellow men can’t be a bad thing. That said, they’re supporting characters who can’t speak English. I’m guessing there’ll be issues with making a full film with them as the stars.
Will Minions make much money?
OH fuggety fuggin yes. There is a lot of anticipation that Minions will be a top grosser this year. Maybe not the biggest animated film of the year, since Inside Out has done well, but Minions should easily break $100 million opening weekend.
Final Thoughts on Minions
I hope Gru shows up. And my lady likes them so much she bought a Minion PEZ dispenser and Minion Tic Tacs, so I have to be nice about them or I’ll wake up one morning and notice I’m lacking in penile function.
