They held the open workouts at the Chicago Theater. It’s a beautiful facility, looking like it was ripped out of the pages of a grand novel by some smart guy with taste, with plush red seats and a massive balcony. Even curiouser is that the PFL will be holding an event at said venue, and I’m fascinated by how it would look. I envision a massive cage with nothing and no one on one side, while people smoking cigars and wearing tuxedos mumble about how the orchestra seating sure has changed over the years. You see the massive black and white letters on the marquee that are hand changed fade into black as you rush underneath it. Every TV show I saw of New York City – I’m mostly thinking an episode of Seinfeld – had the outside awning looming overhead that you’d huddle under in the rain, desperate to get inside like they’re a Vietnamese anti-communist in Saigon, and so does the Chicago Theater.
Once inside, you shuffle past the security guards who earn their $8.50/hour and all the cock he can fondle, it explodes open with life and low murmurs, with velvet ropes getting in the way as much as corralling the drunks happily waiting for a chance to drink wine out of a plastic cup, like some sad and faded version of a college frat party. There is this attempted opulence of dull red drooping it’s so thick paint everywhere and dirty gold fleece looking drapes. What a cool location to watch pure rage.
